The Municipal Foundation of Culture of the Valladolid City Council will launch in the coming weeks the procedure to choose the new director of the Valladolid International Film Week with the aim of replacing Javier Angulo, who has communicated his decision to leave the direction of SEMINCI after 15 editions.

Javier Angulo, who was appointed director of the Valladolid Festival in 2008, will remain in office, acting, until the appointment of his successor, which will be carried out by calling a public contest.

Throughout almost 15 years, under the direction of Javier Angulo, the Festival has expanded its different sections, making room for many more titles, as well as extending its reach, adding new audiences in each edition.

During this period, Seminci has incorporated sections that are today a benchmark for the audiovisual industry, such as DOC. Spain, dedicated to the Spanish documentary genre; Castilla y León in Short and Castilla y León in Long, focused on the audiovisual production of the Community; Cinema & Climate Change, aimed at showing films with a sensitivity towards the need to protect the planet and environmental values; Cine Gourmet –formerly Cine & Vino, a window that combines the seventh art with the world of wine and gastronomy; Seminci Series, a novelty in the latest edition that accommodates fiction productions from televisions and platforms; and Miniminci and Seminci Joven, aimed exclusively at schoolchildren.

In addition, sections such as Meeting Point have been redefined, which went from being an exhibition of all kinds of films to being competitive for first and second films, or History Time and DOC. Spain, which began as sections limited to feature films and have incorporated short films in successive editions.

Other novelties incorporated into Seminci’s programming scheme during the direction of Javier Angulo have been the organization of the professional meetings Forum of Women Filmmakers of Spain or Find Distribution in Seminci, or the spatial and temporal extension during the year of Seminci’s activities, through the projection cycles Seminci District in the neighborhoods of Valladolid, Seminci Territory in the province or Seminci Community in Castilla y León, the Seminci Campus training cycle or the Seminci Factory/Valladolid Film Office short film competition, in addition to the opening of Espacio Seminci , which summarizes the history of the festival and is also the Festival’s documentation center and a place where all kinds of activities related to the audiovisual sector are held.

In the last fifteen years, five new prizes have been created in the list of winners of the contest: the Ribera de Duero prize for Best Director; the ‘Miguel Delibes’ award for Best Screenplay; the ‘José Salcedo’ award for Best Editing and the Rainbow and Green Spikes, intended, respectively, for the best film that shows greater sensitivity towards the LGBTI community and towards the need to protect the planet and environmental values.

The presence of international figures such as Paul Schrader, Ettore Scola, Matt Dillon, Juliette Binoche, Woody Allen, Geraldine Chaplin, Robert Guédiguian, the Dardenne brothers, Wolker Schlöndorff, Ai Weiwei, Bong Joon-ho, Juan José Campanella, Vittorio Storaro, Jacques Audiard, Arturo Ripstein, Nani Moretti, Miguel Gomes, Naomi Kawase, Jim Sheridan or Adoor Gopalakrishnan, among others. There was no shortage of the most relevant Spanish actors, actresses and directors who were awarded the Spike of Honor at the Spanish Film Gala that has been held over the years on the Tuesday of the festival.

With Angulo, the Festival has made the leap from the exclusively face-to-face to the digital environment, with the launch of the online section Ventana Cinéfila, aimed at schoolchildren from all over Spain, the incorporation of festival content to the Filmin platform, the creation of Canal Seminci for the live broadcast of the festival’s informative acts, and the digitization of the festival’s audiovisual collections since 1983. The Seminci logo and header have also been renewed, as well as the renewal of the website corporate.

All of this has contributed to consolidating the prestige of Seminci -the Observatory of Culture places the festival as the first cultural event in Castilla y León and in 27th place among the most outstanding cultural institutions and events at a national level-, consolidating its position within of the international audiovisual industry and multiply the dimension of Seminci, expanding its audience base: since the 53rd edition, Angulo’s first as director, the number of titles screened has gone from 156 in 2008 to 273 screened in the last edition, while the number of viewers, which in its first year was 40,000, in 2022 has reached 212,831.
