Logbook. Mrs. Moratti, take a step back. And remember who really hates it

Letizia Moratti

Please don’t ask me to speak ill of Letizia Moratti. What she and her family did in favor of Muccioli and her community, perhaps the only one in Italy where drug addicts were really redeemed, is enough to vaccinate me from the temptation of backbiting. In addition I have a moral debt towards him, for an important appointment that I received, even if it was not successful, not through his fault but for the indifference of the center-right towards the problems of the public service and for the cynicism with which the center-left applied – in violation of the Constitution – the criteria of the spoil system.

Nonetheless, there is something about his latest choice that puzzles me. Not because Moratti should have been eternally grateful to the center-right for the posts received: president of Rai (when Rai presidents counted more than today), minister of education, mayor of Milan, when there was still a clear prevalence of the center-right in the Lombard capital. , and then councilor and vice president of the Lombardy Region, a position from which she resigned in an attempt to run to the next regional with a foreign party and hostile to the center-right coalition.

For wealth and ability, Moratti did not have and does not need politics to live. And I believe that in various roles you have given more than you have received, not only in economic terms.

What is hard for me to understand is something else: how did he manage not to leave the center-right, but to join a party that was close to siding with the Democratic Party and that in Lombardy will be an active part in the climb to the Pirellone? What I reproach them is not ingratitude towards friends, but indulgence towards enemies.

The fact is that in the early 2000s, when you were Minister of Education, I found myself having to repel in many school assemblies the episodes of hatred that oozed from the often spurious criticism of the reform you were trying to launch, to ascertain the ‘profound hatred towards him in “red” regions such as Tuscany, and then to witness the processions in which teachers, parents, schoolchildren paraded to the cry of “Moratti, Moratti, go wash the dishes”, stirred up and certainly cases led by some school manager who would never accept criticism in the management of his school. And I understood that that against him was not only a political, but a social, anthropological, ultimately classist hatred, because Minister Moratti was not forgiven what the people of the left forgive without many problems to those who take their side, actors, writers, building owners, today influencers: the fact of being rich, distinguished, elegant, of being from a good family and having had a beautiful wedding. Proof of this is that against Minister Gelmini, who during her stay at the MIUR she did more damage than hail and made the teachers’ work much more onerous, the protests never reached the same level.

Letizia Moratti would do well to remember him, while he is in time. And to remember who the whistles and offenses against her came from on April 25, 2006, when she wanted to participate, as a candidate for mayor, in the Liberation procession, accompanying her disabled father in a wheelchair, deported to German concentration camps at the time, and he had to abandon the route halfway.

For this reason, without prejudice to my gratitude towards her, I invite Letizia Moratti to take a step back: it is not certain that it would not be a step forward.
