A very exciting ceremony, full of smiles and emotion, was held on November 11th on the occasion of the award ceremony of the twelfth edition of the creative writing competition “Dear diary, I write to you…”. The auditorium of the “Vann’Antò” Comprehensive Institute of Ragusa has been repopulated with children, parents and teachers to celebrate the talent of the young pupils of the third grades of the lower secondary schools of the Municipality of Ragusa who have won with their works the literary competition born in 2010 in memory of the late Antonella Licitra, teacher of the Vann’Antò institute, which hosts the event, and carried out with dedication by her husband, the artist Sandro Bracchitta.
This 2022 edition of the “Dear Diary” competition appeared, through the writings of the children, deeply influenced by the particular historical period that the whole world is experiencing, and demonstrates sensitivity and closeness, maturity and participation. The fears, fears and anxieties of war dominate and reverberate in the victors’ diaries. Sara Criscione, from the “Salvatore Quasimodo” Comprehensive Institute, wins first place and wins a laptop telling the day of Yana, a Ukrainian girl, in her ordinary normality and disruptive adolescent restlessness.
The explosion of the bombs will put an end to his wonderful everyday life. Questions on war and reflections on peace prevail in the text by Salvatore Tumino, of the Istituto Comprensivo “Maria Schininà”, which reaches second place by winning a book voucher worth 200 euros.
Still of war we speak in the diary of Maria Perracchio, of the Comprehensive Institute “Berlinguer”, the young writer is the third classified and receives a voucher worth 150 euros. In her writing about her, the girl identifies with the days of escape of a young refugee.
The writings of Carola Scrofani and Carla Campo, both of the Salvatore Quasimodo Institute, deserve two special mentions. Their writings are a lively and throbbing chronicle of adolescence, a sparkling and profound emotional account. To them goes a selection of books edited by Angelo Licitra, Antonella’s brother and the only permanent juror of the juries that have alternated in these twelve editions.
The rest of the commission that judged the texts received was composed of Tamara Agosta, Gianni Canzonieri, Patrizia Carpano, Guido Mezzasalma and Silvia Occhipinti. The prizes were awarded by the head teacher Teresa Giunta and the president of the jury of the competition Sandro Bracchitta. Exceptional readers of the winning diaries were Arianna Vitale, Alfredo Gurrieri and Althea Ruta, young actors of the GoDoT Company.
This year the artist who paid homage to the poster of the event with one of his works was Giovanni Blanco, with the oil on canvas entitled “Voci prime” of 2021. The prizes were awarded by the winners of past editions in a sort passing the baton. A very engaging edition, which made us reflect and excite, and which sees in the road dedicated to creative writing, to the search for oneself, to the exploration of one’s own experiences and in comparison with the other, a road sown by love and passion that Antonella Licitra poured into reading and her students, a great inspiring force. “Dear diary, I write to you …” is an important opportunity that allows us to show and, therefore, to know, an aspect of the experience of our adolescents, and highlights their sensitivity, potential, energy and intellectual vivacity.
