Starting from the 2022-2023 school year, I have the honor to hold the position of Headmaster of the Comprehensive Catanzaro North-East Manzoni Institute, thanking the Director General for Calabria, Dr. Antonella Iunti, for the mandate given to me. I would like to extend my warmest greetings to the entire Community that immediately welcomed me with cordiality and enthusiasm, the College of Teachers who made me feel an integral part of the collegial body and stood by me with emotional support and full availability to collaborate. I greet the Director of General and Administrative Services, the administrative staff, the school collaborators, the families and our dear students, whom I embrace all from the heart. I greet the Mayor of the city of Catanzaro, the President of the School Council and all its members, the School Managers of all schools, the Pastors, the Presidents of the Associations operating in the area, the Trade Union Organizations, the world of volunteering and all the actors of the territory. I extend a cordial greeting to the outgoing Headmaster, Dr. Mottola Flora Alba.

I propose to carry out the delicate task animated by the sense of belonging to the Public Administration and by the principles of correctness, good faith, commitment and responsibility, as well as by the principles of educational relationship, listening, care that must be embodied in those who like myself it must also carry out an educational and formative mandate at the service of the scholastic and social reality. The school that we want and intend to build during my mandate must be a “garrison of legality, open to the territory, a permanent laboratory of education and training, an institution that guides respect for the rules and that makes inclusion a project to be accepted. to share and increase. My commitment will be to capitalize on what has been done to date, with a view to growth and continuous improvement, sure that we will always put ourselves in a position of listening and caring towards the other. In this brief reflection I cannot fail to recall the past two years, in which the whole school with operators, families and health care found itself faced with “the unexpected” and having to invent new ways of teaching.

The two years of the pandemic, the emergency and the effort of inventing new solutions to keep active an indispensable service for students and families, have made us aware that we have changed, that the school system we knew can no longer exist as if nothing had happened, that we have known many things that we did not know, put in place paths that we had not thought of and that we have been able to observe the students from different points of view.

So the questions we must ask ourselves are: “What have we learned? Faced with the difficulties that the evaluation system indicates to us, what can we do to make our work more effective? How to guarantee pupils a school that really helps them to grow, socialize and learn the profession of conscious citizens? “. It is evident that a revision of tools, methods and contents is necessary, above all, to systematize the good practices tested; those practices that have produced better results and that have made it possible to verify that breaking the traditional desk-desk scheme can open the doors to laboratory teaching capable of arousing interest, commitment and curiosity. We have also, in a wide and widespread way, used advanced technological tools, used platforms for distance learning and had the opportunity to appreciate their advantages and disadvantages, aware that without the contribution of these tools, communication with pupils and families would have been interrupted.

We also understood that no tool is good in itself, but that each can be adapted to the different needs of individual pupils and that the response to these needs can only be personalized. We have also learned to evaluate commitment, creativity, problem solving skills, promptness of intervention, curiosity and solidarity, skills that are much “richer” than the knowledge found many times in many tests in the classroom: a new path has thus been outlined, still partly to be explored, but which will allow us to better define personalized and motivating paths based on responsibility and self-assessment.

Surely the pandemic period, alongside the countless difficulties it has placed before us, has reiterated to all of us that school is an essential service for society as it also supports families and the economy of the country and that its function today goes much further. beyond the traditional education and transmission of knowledge. In following the path of reconstruction, I trust in the commitment of the families to whom I ask for a communion of formative intentions and effective collaboration, to be translated into attitudes, behaviors and ways of acting. I will be ready to listen to everyone’s needs, although I will not always have a solution shared by all. Even my no will always be motivated and in favor of and protecting the interests of the pupils entrusted to me. I ask the teachers and staff of the Institute for a constant commitment, trusting in the commitment and responsibility of each one.

I wish them to approach this job with enthusiasm, passion and motivation, aspects which, although not configured as professional skills, are in my opinion “the essential conditions” “that propel us towards an inclusive, innovative and loving school. I expect from all of you what I also expect from myself: “the care of others and the care of ourselves”. A good school year everyone!
