With the purpose of instructing by playing and having a happy day, hundreds of children from Buenos Aires learned to take care of their health from experts from Funcei, a foundation chaired by Dr. Daniel Stamboulian.

With proposals according to each age, they worked on an educational health campaign “The Power of the Immune System and Vaccines”, which was based on topics such as the immune system, vaccines and physical and emotional well-being, together with the accompaniment of coordinators, operators and families.

With joy, fun and enthusiasm, which is the best way for children to learn to take care of their health, this second edition of the Funcei campaign was developed, in the CAF, CEDI and A LA PAR Programs dependent on the Directorate for Children and Adolescents of the Ministry of Human Development and Habitat of the City of Buenos Aires (MDHyH). The campaign, which was declared of educational interest by said institution, had a scope of 1,200 boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 12.

On November 16, during the closing day held at the SUM of the MDHyH, the creations of the participants were exhibited. The meeting overflowed with color, laughter and satisfaction for the achievements achieved. 210 boys and girls participated in the closing day together with their coordinators and operators. “We form a great team to raise awareness in adults and children about the importance of self-care. We saw reflected in this formal closing the commitment of each one of the educators with our proposal, who approached the contents in a very didactic and attractive way for the children”, emphasized Cristina Stamboulian, director of the Educational Department of Funcei.

The pandemic presented the challenge of putting together specific children’s material on the defenses of the human body that would promote self-care and practices that contribute to healthy and happy growth. The immune system, central material of the campaign. “It encourages boys to become ‘superheroes’ and ‘superheroines’ of their own bodies, and to discover the ‘power’ they have to take care of their health and promote their physical, emotional and social well-being”, explained Cintya Elmassian, M.D. , coordinator of the campaign and member of the Educational Department of Funcei.

The importance of completing vaccination schemes was a central axis in 2022, due to the worrying drop in calendar vaccination rates, from the COVID-19 pandemic in both children and adults, for which vaccination was promoted for complete these diagrams. As one of the operators commented, “we started making comics with the boys, they put together, wrote and painted them themselves, with which creativity was encouraged. In this cartoon created by one of the boys, for example, the protagonist is a boy who realizes that he has not been vaccinated, so he takes a turn, gets the vaccine and thus can come to CAF”.

With the support of the industry, Funcei donated copies of the book for school-age children. The youngest received the titles Become a friend of the vaccine and A winning team. The referents of each program were given the guide Growing up healthy at home and at school.

“The operators approached the contents adapting the proposals to each level of recipients with great creativity, and we were delighted with the works that were presented to us”, expressed Cintya Elmassian.

Upon entering the Ministry Room, with a ribbon cutting, Roberto Candiano, Director of Children and Adolescents of the MDHyH, together with Adriana Gak, organizer of the event and general coordinator of the CAF Program, welcomed the first group of Boys. Then, they went in subgroups to each stand with their operators, to play and interact with each proposal.

For example, in the “Hospital de los muñecos”, they recreated a vaccination room, including a refrigerator for the vaccines, and a pediatric office, where they played to vaccinate. Others worked on the importance of hand washing and became aware of the germs found there and the diseases they cause. A group entered with superhero capes, they told what their powers were so as not to allow germs to enter their body. All the games were created with recycled material.

In recognition of the work carried out, each operator and coordinator received a certificate of recognition from Funcei.

Susana Stoisa, responsible for Training and Projects of the CAF Program, summarized: “The children learned, played, got excited and shared.” On the one hand, she valued the closure of the campaign for the comprehensive health of the community, after the pandemic; on the other, the years of working with Funcei. “We thank you for the material and symbolic contribution so that this new project could come to fruition,” she concluded.
