Penultimate day as president of the Province of Prato for Francesco Puggelli who will end his four-year term tomorrow. Here is the balance sheet for the mandate at Palazzo Banci Buonamici.
“I am leaving this position satisfied with what I have achieved in the four years as president and aware that I have given the Province back a central role in territorial management”, says Puggelli. “I took over the Province in a difficult situation, after the Delrio law had considerably limited the institution’s potential. Despite the limited resources, thanks also to the good work of the offices, we have managed to give life to numerous projects in the areas of competence – school construction and roads – in a historical period where everything has been complicated by the pandemic. The management of the Covid situation, especially in the school environment, has not been trivial and has absorbed time, resources and energy. The last great satisfaction is having been the first province of Tuscany to have launched tenders for projects financed by the PNRR, and to have done so when the State extended the deadlines and despite the fact that we were understaffed: this is because the institution has worked excellently and demonstrated what its potential is, if well directed”.
“However, the work of the Province in recent years has not been limited to public works”, continues the outgoing president. “Palazzo Banci Buonamici had its doors open on two fronts. On the one hand we wanted to open the building to activities aimed at the citizens, on the other we have made considerable progress towards making the Province a real house of the Municipalities. These results were also possible thanks to the role played in UPI and the constant commitment to intermediating between the various institutional levels, so as to restore to the Province a central role it had previously lost. Finally, I am proud to leave an institution with a positive balance sheet to whoever takes my place. I wish the next president to carry on the work of these years in the best possible way, to make the Province grow further with all its potential”.
As far as school construction is concerned, during the four-year period all the institutes were subject to renovation, maintenance or construction of new buildings. A total investment of over 54 million, of which over 4 million for work already completed and the remainder in progress or planned. Among the ongoing and planned interventions, those financed with PNRR funds (12 million euros) stand out, which the Province was able to intercept by carrying out the planning well in advance and confirming itself as the first Tuscan province to tender for Pnrr projects .
Constant dialogue with school principals for the management of the emergency situation due to the pandemic has also been fundamental in recent years, as well as the annual issues related to the management of spaces for the increase in the school population.
As part of the road network, projects have been implemented for a total of over 53 million euros. Of these, interventions for over 4 and a half million have already been completed and interventions for 10 and a half million are underway. Interventions for over 12 million euros are already planned and the remaining (about 26 million) are projects awaiting funding. The interventions concerned all the provincial roads, in addition to the regional roads under the jurisdiction of the Province. In parallel, a census of all the bridges was carried out and safety works where necessary were carried out or planned.
Palazzo Banci welcomed the students who concluded their studies with the graduation party, hosted the Christmas markets and numerous cultural and social events.
