The evening movie, which starts at 8.45 p.m., has long been a thing of the past. And it’s not going to work out. Of the this Saturday, January 8, 2022, TF1, France 2, France 3 or Culturebox will shift (a little) their prime time schedules. Of 9:05 p.m., it will now be necessary to wait until 9:10 p.m. for the start of the evening first part programmes. On France 5, the evening will begin at 9 p.m. (instead of 8:55 p.m.) and on CStarat 9:05 p.m.

A systematic five-minute delaybut which does not have a major impact on our television programs.

In a report published on December 14, the Superior Audiovisual Council (CSA), which has become Arcom since January 1, 2022, had already pointed out sometimes significant delays between the announced times (TV program, website) and the actual start of the programs. Also, this new shift planned from Saturday aims to stick more closely to the actual broadcast times.

Never on time

Who hasn’t complained while waiting for the movie that starts late? It’s not just an impression. In its report, the CSA pinpoints the channels that are further behind in 2021 than in 2020.

On a study carried out during the 3rd week of September, the Sages of audiovisual note that the delay was on average 3 minutes 54 against 2 minutes 33 in November 2019.

Five channels cross the threshold of 5 minutes and two of them, TF1 and TMC7 minutes.

The CSA said to itself “regularly questioned by viewers about the time delays of programs early evening on television.

Complaints from viewers relate to two reasons: on the one hand, the gradual shift, over the years, of the early evening schedules of television programs and, on the other hand, the recurring delays with regard to the schedules announced in the press. and on the Internet.

Audiovisual Superior Council

In the end, for the viewer, no big change, it is simply the channels, masters of time, which indicate schedules closer to reality for the broadcasting of programs.

How to explain it?

Several reasons can explain these delays. Already, it is good to remember that the hours are indicated only as an indication. “The audiovisual legal framework does not impose a precise schedule for television programs: the channels are therefore free to compose their schedule as they wish”, also supports the CSA.

For the rest, it is necessary to take into account the variable of live (or almost simultaneous) broadcasts, such as Daily on TMC, It’s up to you on France 5 or Do not touch My TV on C8. Sometimes, these entertainments overflow a little on their time slot, which forces all the other programs to shift.

Newspapers can also eat away at some of their allotted time.

Finally, and this is obviously a more delicate point, and which annoys many viewers, The advertisement as well as trailersdepending on their number, can impact the TV program.

Our colleagues from Parisian report that after 9 p.m., when the most people are at their desks, 30-second ads can spike up to 100,000 euro before a very popular show (although prices may vary). A boon for TV groups who prefer to shift their programs and take the opportunity to broadcast a few additional spots.

The channels must respect the schedules

However, the CSA recalls in its report that the chains have an obligation with regard to the announced schedules.

They must respect the provisions present in their agreement (for the private channels) and the specifications of the missions and specifications of France Télévisions, which provide that the channels respect, subject to the constraints inherent in the broadcasting of live broadcasts, the schedules previously announced.

Audiovisual Superior Council

And it is precisely on this point that the audiovisual regulator notices a relaxation. Of new hourly records will be carried out in the first half of 2022 in order to verify that the channels play the game of the schedules in force. Until then, the clocks will have to be respected.
