Venezia 79, Leone d’oro to All the beauty and the bloodshed, Leone d’Argento to Luca Guadagnino for “Bones and All”

The curtain closes on SU Venezia 79, an edition of “extraordinary normality” as the godmother Rocio Munoz Morales defined it, referring to the ways in which the festival took place after the pandemic.
The Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival 2022 went to the documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed”Directed by Laura Poitras and focusing on the history of the internationally renowned artist and activist Nan Goldin.
Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize went to Luca Guadagnino for “Bones and All”. The director wanted to dedicate the award to Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof arrested by the Iranian government, declaring: “Long live them, long live the subversion and long live the cinema!”.

Among the winners Colin Farrell for Best Actor for “The spirits of the island”. The interpreter not present in the Lagoon, due to work commitments, greeted the public remotely. The director of the film Martin McDonagh received the award for him.

Coppa Volpi to Cate Blanchett for Todd Field’s “Tár”. She, the actress, gets this accolade for the second time after being honored fifteen years ago for Todd Haynes’ “I’m Not Here” in which she embodied one of Bob Dylan’s faces. In “Tár” Blachett plays the role of Lydia Tár, a renowned conductor and composer in the international world of classical music, the first woman (and homosexual) to obtain the conduct of the Berlin Orchestra which is accused of harassment.

Special Jury Prize

The special prize for the Jury was awarded to “Bears don’t exist ”by Jafar Panahi. The film’s performers accepted the award. The award was followed by a standing ovation in the room.

Horizons Section
For the section Horizons “Jang-e Jahani Sevom” (WORLD WAR III) by Houman Seyedi was awarded Best Film, while Best Actress was awarded to Vera Gemma for the film “Vera” by Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel. The film also won the Best Director award.

The special prize of the Orizzonti Jury, chaired by Isabel Coixet, it went to Damian Kocur’s Polish “Chleb i Sòl” (Bread and Salt).

Mohsen Tanabandeh, star of the film Jang-e J “ahani Sevom” (WORLD WAR III) by Houman Seyedi was awarded Best Actor. The Best Screenplay in this section went to Fernando Guzzoni for Fernando Guzzoni’s “Blanquita”.

Finally for the Best Short Film is been selected “Snow in September” by Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir.

Venice Film Festival 2022: the winners of the other awards
The Leoncino d’Oro

The 2022 Venice Film Festival Leoncino d’Oro Award went to Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” starring an unrecognizable Brendan Fraser as an obese and homosexual English teacher who must try to mend a relationship with his teenage daughter.

Marcello Mastroianni Award

The Mastroianni award, dedicated to a young talent, went to Canadian Taylor Russell, who starred in Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All” with Timothée Chalamet and Chloë Sevigny.

Pasinetti Award

“Siccità” by Paolo Virzì, presented Out of Competition, and the whole cast received the Francesco Pasinetti 2022 Award assigned by the Italian Film Journalists (Sngci).

Lion of the Future: De Laurentiis Award for Best First Feature

The Lion of the Future, which rewards the first works, went to Alice Diop for “Saint Omer“. The award, established by a jury led by the director Michelangelo Frammartino, was delivered by Mario Martone. The film marks the debut in a fictional film by the French documentary maker of Senegalese origin and tells a shocking story about an infanticide that actually took place in 2016 in France.

Venezia Classic for the best documentary

The award went to KD Davison’s Fragments of Paradise, dedicated to Lithuanian director Jonas Mekas.

Mimmo Rotella Foundation Award

The Mimmo Rotella Foundation Award went to Oliver Stone the Rotella Award for directing “Nuclear”, presented out of competition at the Venice Film Festival.

The Venice Film Festival has turned 90, “even if it declares 79”, joked the president of the Biennale Roberto Cicutto, making an appointment for the all-round edition 80 from the August 30, 2023.
