Wrap a book, give a future. Oxfam Italia and Mondadori Store together again at Christmas to ensure inclusive education for all

Guaranteeing an inclusive education for all: this is the objective that, again this year, for the second consecutive year, Oxfam is launching together with the Mondadori Store through the Christmas project “Wrap a book, give a future”. This initiative is part of a partnership which sees the Mondadori Store and Oxfam together in activities aimed at helping and supporting the most vulnerable part of our society.

A concrete commitment by the first network of bookshops in Italy to offer a contribution to the education of children and young people in socially difficult contexts. Oxfam has in fact been active for over 20 years in Italy and around the world in programs to fight educational poverty.

The activity of 2021, the starting year of the partnership, generated a fundraising of over 127 thousand euros for projects that guarantee equity and equal opportunities for access and academic success for the most fragile students in Italy. In particular, Oxfam and Mondadori Store contributed to the creation and management of study support courses for 500 fragile Italian and foreign students, for scholastic recovery, study aid and motivational support and mentoring activities for fragile secondary school students of both grades .

Furthermore, during the year, Oxfam and Mondadori Store joined forces again in favor of Ukraine, supporting, with funds amounting to 6,000 euros, projects that have favored the inclusion of refugees from Ukraine, providing support in access to services thanks to linguistic-cultural mediation and by launching study accompaniment courses for 30 Ukrainian pupils to promote school integration and socialization in the communities in which they are hosted.

This Christmas it will be possible to support Oxfam’s work for the most vulnerable with the project “Wrap a book, give a future”: until 24 December it will be possible to have your Christmas presents wrapped by one of the over 100 Oxfam volunteers present in the 64 Mondadori bookshops participating in the main Italian cities.

With a small donation, Oxfam and the Mondadori Store initiative can be supported to ensure fairness and equal opportunities for access and academic success for the most vulnerable students, helping children and young people who are currently at risk of educational exclusion in Italy.

It will also be possible to contribute to the project online, by donating through the dedicated Oxfam page at www.oxfamitalia.org/mondadori.

Year after year, Oxfam has been intensifying its work to combat early school leaving and educational poverty since the beginning of the pandemic, improving access to socio-educational services for the many families in serious economic difficulty, today grappling with the ever-increasing impact stronger than the “expensive life”. A commitment that for the school year that has just begun will be implemented in over 30 schools, together with more than 3,000 students and hundreds of teachers. Thanks to the common work with many local and national partners, institutions and realities of the third sector.

Students and teachers will thus have the opportunity, by attending workshops and courses, for example, to experiment with new teaching practices aimed at strengthening school skills, eliminating gender inequalities in schools and developing new digital skills.

To address the problem of school integration of Ukrainian children arriving in Italy, Oxfam has also launched a linguistic mediation and accompaniment intervention in 15 primary and secondary schools at the end of last school year which will continue for the new school year. A delicate path, which in some cases takes place together with the distance learning that some Ukrainian schools have continued to offer to students, but which over the months, and the continuation of the war, is becoming essential.

“Our challenge is to respond to the changes imposed by the pandemic over the last 2 very difficult school years”, said Roberto Barbieri, general manager of Oxfam Italia. they live in conditions of greater social hardship and thus risk being left behind. we also want to support children and young people who have arrived in our country, who are now trying to return to a semblance of normality. At a national level today only half of the students have finished school high school achieves adequate levels in basic skills and 13.1% of students drop out of school early.A reality that places Italy far from the European objective of reducing the dropout rate to 9% and which continues to concern, above all young foreigners, of whom as much as 35.4% leave school early. These are alarming figures, which demonstrate how much still remains to be done and how necessary it is to do it all together. For this we want to thank Mondadori Store, for the support thanks to which we will be able to be even more effective”.

“School exclusion risks becoming an even more evident reality for some segments of the population, in a global context of uncertainty and economic crisis such as the one we are experiencing. As publishers and booksellers we have a responsibility to offer our support to ensure a better future for children and young people. Our commitment alongside Oxfam therefore continues, aware that culture and education are primary channels for promoting inclusiveness, social cohesion and the growth of all of us, in line with the sustainability objectives of the entire Mondadori Group” , declared Francesco Riganti, marketing director of Mondadori Retail.

The Mondadori Store initiative with Oxfam is part of the social responsibility process that the Mondadori Group has been undertaking for some time, including through a series of activities in support of communities, from the promotion of reading and education to training and social assistance and healthcare.
