At safety school: Cittadinanzattiva project in Molise

CAMPOBASSO. It began on Monday 21 November 2022 in two schools in Molise: the Francesco Jovine State Comprehensive Institute in Campobasso and the San Giovanni Bosco Comprehensive Institute in Isernia.

The training and awareness-raising process is aimed, in each Institute, at a class 4 of primary school and a class 2 of secondary school and will end in June 2023 with the aim of protecting school well-being and safety through the involvement and strengthening of empowerment of its protagonists so that they become “SAFETY TUTORS”, that is protagonists aware of their own well-being.

The project will be implemented thanks to the support of the Otto per Mille funds of the Waldensian Evangelical Church which every year finances social and health care projects, educational, cultural and integration interventions, development support programs and response programs to humanitarian, environmental and climate emergencies , which bring benefits to a community and are not for profit.

In 2022, the Otto per Mille of the Waldensian Church financed 450 projects to be carried out abroad and 1107 projects in Italy, ranging from various fields such as education, humanitarian, social-health and cultural, for a total of 1557 projects.

Twenty years after the tragedy of the San Giuliano di Puglia school, Cittadinanzattiva Molise has chosen, among the various areas proposed by the Waldensian Church, the promotion of well-being in schools, which has always been a topic of particular interest to Cittadinanzattiva, among the first to denounce the emergency situation in which the school building found itself. The tragedy of San Giuliano di Puglia made it dramatically evident to the whole country what was the reality of most of the school buildings.

For years, the Scuola di Cittadinanza Attiva has been providing, with the Safe Learning program, an updated picture on the state of safety, quality and accessibility of Italian schools and promotes communication actions with the institutions. For 19 years, through a national report, it has been trying to provide an interpretation of the official national and regional data as well as to carry out targeted surveys to grasp the complexity of the problems that characterize this area, providing possible interpretations and solutions according to the point of view of the citizen user and helping to resolve the most serious cases among those intercepted.

The “At school for safety” project fits into this framework, punctuated by psychoeducational group activities and a peer education path in which the students themselves will pass on what they have learned to their peers, with their own language and tools. It will thus be possible to enhance the empowerment of students, understood as a set of emotional, cognitive and relational skills and school safety will be the background to the broader concept of safety, understood as a condition that makes and makes one feel free from dangers or which gives the possibility to prevent, eliminate or reduce damages and difficulties. For example, the themes of risk and danger will be extended to the themes of bullying and cyberbullying and the concept of safety will also be drawn with reference to social norms and behaviors in general.

Each class will participate in theoretical / practical meetings held by expert trainers at the end of which certificates of participation will be delivered as a “safety tutor” as a symbol of active and aware citizens.

In fact, this is precisely the “mission” of Cittadinanzattiva: it promotes the activism of citizens for the protection of rights and the care of common goods, with reference to article 118, last paragraph, of the Constitution which recognizes the autonomous initiative of citizens, individuals and associates, for carrying out activities of general interest and, on the basis of the principle of subsidiarity, provides for the obligation for the institutions to favor active citizens.
