Business school work

This is THE educational format that has been gaining momentum in recent months: work-study training* is increasingly requested by business school students. The official figures for the year 2022 will be released in a few months and should confirm the very good results of 2021, the year during which 733,200 new apprenticeship contracts** were signed.

Almost 40% more apprentices were identified in 2021, including a significant share in higher education (38% concerned training at bac+3 beyond, vs 20% in 2018), that is to say the appeal represented by this method of teaching for a long time associated with a relatively average schooling on the academic level. And above all, confined to infra-baccalaureate training. However, just over half of the new apprenticeship contracts signed in 2021 (51%) concerned students aged 20/25. More and more Master’s students are opting for work-studyparticularly in management schools.

Work-study, a new path to excellence

The exceptional aid paid to companies by the State for the hiring of an apprentice in order to promote the professional integration of young people particularly affected by the Covid crisis has undoubtedly contributed to the explosion of this format of studies. . But learning seems to take advantage of this to settle in people’s minds for a long time as a modality whose value is equal to that of training carried out under the status of a “classic” student.

Finally, it could even be considered as a path of excellence. In any case, this is how it is promoted by the Grandes Écoles, which are opening more and more places to meet the demand of students and companies. Some even have their own CFA (Apprentice Training Center) since the “Professional Future” law of September 5, 2018 authorized their opening by private organizations. This is the case of ICN Business School, Audencia, EM Normandie or even emlyon business school, for example. The table below will tell you more.

A solution to finance your studies

The main benefit for apprenticeship students? First the possibility of apply the theoretical teachings worked in class directly in the field, within their host company. It’s a way to quickly win the mastery of technical skillsbut also to acquire soft-skills that are essential in business today: the art of communication, time management, emotional intelligence, etc.

But the apprenticeship contract confers a employee status to the student, who therefore receives remuneration calculated on the basis of the Smic and modulated according to his age. In addition to this monthly income, apprentices do not have to pay tuition fees, paid for by their company throughout the term of their contract. Financially, the interest is real. And even if it is not its primary vocation, apprenticeship can be a valuable support for the financing of studies in a business school.

You can see it in the table above, except for HEC, all the Grandes Ecoles of post-preparatory management offer work-study within their PGE. And this at least in the 3rd year of the program. Almost all of them even offer to complete the two years of Master’s in apprenticeship. At EM Normandie, EM Strasbourg and emlyon, it can extend over a maximum of 15 months, when MBS is the only one in the table to make it accessible over 36 months, i.e. the entire three years of the programme. An option that is not always recommended. Sometimes, giving yourself time to “land” a year after prep can be important. But some student profiles feel ready to start learning quickly!

In terms of possible rhythms, there is still a lot of variety depending on the school. Only INSEEC is on a daily basiswhen her colleagues prefer to offer 2 or 3 weeks in business followed by 1 or 2 week(s) at school. The geographic location of the home campus counts for a lot in the choice of pace. If the company is not located near the school, it is better to avoid juggling from one to another in the same week. For the ICN and the ISC, the rhythm is again different since they offer 6 weeks in companies then 6 weeks at school. This is another approach allowing a different immersion in the missions to be carried out alternately.

The essential ? That communication is fluid between the three parties concerned by the alternation: the school, the company and the apprentice to allow the latter to carry out his missions within the company and to succeed in his course at the ‘school. Sometimes, this involves adjusting the rhythm of the alternation, authorized by certain schools.

* Alternation : the rhythm of study alternated between school and the company
** Learning : the nature of the contract signed between the school, the company and the apprentice. It is also possible to carry out a work-study contract under a professionalization contract, even if they are much less widespread because they primarily concern continuing education.
