School, registrations started: the classes double with the Maturità in 4 years. How do they work

Graduation a year early, to catch up with European peers on time. The experimentation of the ministry of education is appreciated by families and from this year it will be expanded. From next September, in fact, around 400 high school classes will start with a four-year course. The kids who choose this path will thus put themselves in line with the European ones: in fact, obtaining a diploma at 18 instead of 19 is very common in Europe.

School enrollments 2023, online procedures start from Monday 9 January: how they work

School, more classes with maturity at 4 years

For graduates, it is a question of starting the university course or entering the world of work a year earlier. Initially, in 2013, there were only 5 classes that had chosen the four-year course as pilot courses, in a few years we reached one hundred four-year classes and now they have become about 400. An experimentation that continues to grow and will always expand more: according to the objectives set by the Pnrr, in fact, Italy must reach at least a thousand institutions that allow children to graduate at 18, as is already the case in countries such as France, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Belgium. For now there are 400 schools that have decided to activate the courses.

And so the four-year high school, which is being tested, is gradually gaining space and for next September the offer will be doubled: in fact, it goes from the current 200 classes to around 400. One more possible choice for those who, these days, have to identify which higher path to follow in the next school year, 2023-24. There are about 530,000 eighth graders who will have to send an application to enroll in the chosen high school by 30 January. The procedure is online and is the same that students who, in September, will have to attend first grade or sixth grade will also have to follow. But for high school the choice is more complicated, 14-year-olds and their families must in fact identify the most suitable educational path for the student. And in the case of the four-year programme, therefore, the decision to be taken does not only concern the course of study and the location of the upper secondary school but, where possible, also the duration. The four-year courses must have specific requirements: in fact, it is possible to activate only one class per school for a four-year duration.

In the event that there should be more requests, the institute will behave as it happens for waiting lists in other addresses: the students will be selected on the basis of the criteria established by the school council in the school autonomy. In these cases, often, the procedure is based on territorial jurisdiction. For now, the 4-year course has only been activated in high schools and technical institutes, for professionals there are still no ad hoc courses. In order to access a four-year course, you must have completed an 8-year school career and students from 5-year high schools cannot enroll. The intermediate passage, therefore, is not possible: you have to start from the first year and it is not possible to insert yourself during the course of work because the path is different right from the beginning. Just as, therefore, it is not possible to assign an external candidate to a four-year class in the final exam. Those who want the four-year diploma must choose it from the first year and attend the courses. And it is precisely the state exam that is the test to understand if the path works or not. For now, the results are positive. Last June, in fact, the young people who graduated with a 4-year course had results well above the national average. Suffice it to say that 8.9% of students obtained honors against 3.4% of graduates in the five-year courses, while the percentage of students who obtained 100 was 13.3% against a national average of standard courses equal at 9.4%. Similarly, even low grades have a lower percentage than standard courses: in fact, only 1.8% of high school students had the minimum, i.e. 60, against 2.4% of five-year high schools, and 5.2% of students in technical institutes against 5.4% in standard courses.
