Uproar over the separation of Miles Christi in a school in Villa Elisa

From the Archbishopric of La Plata it was known days ago that the Miles Christi Institute, with more than 20 years in Villa Elisa and in charge of the San Luis Gonzaga parish and the San Francisco de Asís school, would have the contract signed in 2006 rescinded In this context, the Archdiocese of La Plata will resume the management of the parish and the school and the priest Marcelo Cerniato was appointed as the new parish priest, who would assume his duties on March 1, 2023 and would be sworn in on Sunday, March 5.

At the San Francisco de Asís school from January 8, Stella Maris Crivelli and Ignacio Manuel Sanguinetti will be the legal representatives. The other lay people who work as directors, teachers or administrators of the College will normally continue in their functions carrying out the planned tasks, as reported by the Archdiocese.

But the news generated at this time “outrage and discomfort” among many lay people who belong to the San Luis Gonzaga parish, who rejected the separation of Miles Christi.

“The process held against Roberto Yannuzzi – the priest denounced for abuse – was carried out at the request of the Miles Christi religious themselves. And, indeed, if the sanction imposed on that person was so harsh, it was due to the tenacity of said religious, who had to overcome many obstacles so that the sentence was not decent at all,” it was reported in part of the statement.

It was explained, “the laity who write this letter are as members of the Church as any prelate, and we do not want to sit idly by in the face of this clericalist crusade that has ignored our voice and our feelings, manifested in letters with hundreds of firms. In this sense, we want to make amends for the good name of the religious of Miles Christi”.

Official statement:

Following the statement issued by the Archbishop of La Plata, Mons. Víctor Manuel Fernández, on December 26, which linked the separation of the Miles Christi Institute (MC) from the San Luis Gonzaga parish and the San Francisco School from Assisi with the expulsion of Roberto Yannuzzi, a legitimate concern has been generated among some of the parents, who think that there could have been abuses of any kind by the current members of the aforementioned Institute. In view of this, it is important to note the following:

1. The process held against Roberto Yannuzzi was carried out at the request of the MC religious themselves. And, indeed, if the sanction imposed on that person was so harsh, it was due to the tenacity of said religious, who had to overcome many obstacles so that the sentence was not at all decent. The community of faithful of the parish became aware of all the steps taken in this regard, thanks to the transparent dialogue maintained with the religious of MC. We also know who would have wanted a lighter sentence and, consequently, has been upset by the “rigidity” of religious sayings. Consequently, linking the issue of Roberto Yannuzzi with the episcopal measure is an injustice and a defamation.

2. The archbishop’s animosity towards Miles Christi is known throughout La Plata, because Mons. Fernández himself has made it openly known. Despite never having visited the parish, nor knowing the parish groups nor the sacramental life, shortly after arriving in the diocese he wanted to strip MC of the parish and the school.

3. Being a man of influence within the hierarchical structure of the Church and having powerful friends, it has not taken long for the Holy See to send first an apostolic visitor to MC and then a pontifical commissioner. Currently he can be satisfied: his wishes have been fulfilled and MC was separated from the leadership of the parish and the school.

4. The laity who write this letter are as members of the Church as any prelate, and we do not want to sit idly by in the face of this clericalist crusade that has ignored our voice and our feelings, manifested in letters with hundreds of signatures. In this sense, we want to redress the good name of the religious of Miles Christi, whom we have known and loved throughout these 22 years, and whose fruit in works has truly been a gift from heaven. We accompany you on his cross, which is also ours, remembering that it is God himself who sends it for the glorification of all.
